Introduction

Notes

Notation

Everyone in this course has the preparation required to master the material presented. There is no advanced math in this class, but you may see notation you have not seen before. Get in the habit of translating all notation you come across in this course into English language sentences and ask questions about notation that is unfamiliar.

Some examples:

\(\sum_{i=1}^nX_i\): Sum \(X_i\) over all units (up to unit \(n\)) indexed by \(i\)

\(\prod_{k=1}^m d_k\): multiply \(d\) over all units (up to unit \(m\)) indexed by \(k\)

What you should know after this week

Each week, we will post a list of skills you should have developed (e.g., drawing line diagrams, defining risk, coding a Cox model). Check the Notes section each week to be sure you are keeping up.

Videos

Recordings of lectures are available on the EPID 722 Sakai site.

Optional readings

Further reading about time in epidemiologic research

  • Cole SR, Hudgens MG, Brookhart MA, Westreich D. Risk Am J Epidemiol. 2015 Feb 15;181(4):246-50

Optional reading (for fun) about learning science and math

Exercise

There is no exercise today.

Questions

Each week, you will use a form below to submit your questions about the week’s reading. By tomorrow at 12pm, please navigate to the page for Lecture 1 to find the assigned reading and submit your question.
